This vat-dyed kozo sheet has been treated with konnyaku (devil's root) starch making it literally "strengthened" and it is hand-crinkled.  After several rounds of boiling the paper with konnyaku starch (applied like a clear paint),and drying on the line in between, the sheet becomes a fabric used in the old days for many household goods as well as clothing.

This particular sheet is close to 30 years old and made by Awagami, Tokushima, Japan...
